EARLY LIFE
Jacob Lervold was born in Everett, Washington and grew up in Marysville/Tulalip, Washington. He comes from a hard-working blue-collar family. His father, two older brothers, two of his uncles, and his grandfather were or are currently union workers. His great grandparents on both sides of his family were farmers.
Growing up, he remembers being on reduced lunches, wondering if there would be money for school clothes, or whether the electricity or water would be shut off. He always did everything he could to help his parents. There simply wasn’t enough no matter how hard his parents worked. He would help his father cut wood and do construction jobs to bring in extra money. He always wanted to help because his parents worked hard to provide the best situation possible for him and his siblings. At the age of sixteen, he got his first job at Arby’s and has been working ever since.
DURING UNDERGRAD
Before his first year of college, he worked two jobs that summer. The first job was at a temp agency where he worked in a factory building chain-link fences and at a fish processing plant cleaning up raw fish debris. In addition to the temp work, he worked a second job at the Seattle Premium Outlet Malls at a clothing store.
During his undergrad at the University of Washington, he worked at various retail stores and at the food court on campus. He also started his own business distributing fireworks for a wholesaler. During the fireworks season, it was typical to put in 14+ hour days seven days a week. He increased sales from roughly $27,000 to over $140,000 in two years.
DURING LAW SCHOOL
The summer after his first year of law school at Arizona State he did an unpaid externship at the Arizona Corporation Commission. To help with finances, he worked in the evenings at Chipotle after spending the day at the externship. During the second summer, he was able to obtain a paid internship at the City of Marysville working on criminal matters in their municipal court. He was able to live at home with his parents to save.
During his last semester at Arizona State, he was a visiting student at the University of Washington Law School. He was a broke student who needed to take a bar prep class, the last step to reaching his dream of becoming a lawyer. So, he decided to enter a writing competition with the bar associations Construction Law section. Fortunately, he won and used the proceeds for the bar prep class.
POST LAW SCHOOL
After passing the bar exam, he began his legal career at the Cowlitz County Prosecutor’s Office in their District Court. He quickly worked his way up to handling felony cases. While working and living in Cowlitz County, he met the love of his life. They got married and recently had their first child who is currently transitioning into the toddler phase of her development.
When his wife completed school, they moved from Cowlitz County to Thurston County. He obtained a job at the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office. He began in the District Court Division as the assigned DUI prosecutor before being promoted to the General Felony Unit as the Serious Traffic Crimes Prosecutor.
During COVID, it was an interesting time in the court systems just as it was with everything else going on in the world. He ended up leaving the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office to take advantage of an opportunity to become a regional manager at a property management company. During this time, he realized that money is not everything if you are not passionate about the work you are doing. In a little over year, he was back to doing what he loved, practicing law.
When he returned to the Cowlitz County Prosecutor’s Office, he was promoted to becoming a Senior Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. He has remained at the Cowlitz County Prosecutor’s Office ever since.
